Weight Loss At Randali Centre

The Problem

Each year obesity is responsible for 300,000 deaths in the U.S. It is the second leading cause of preventable deaths, just behind cigarette smoking. Not simply a cosmetic problem, obesity is a serious disease of epidemic proportions – no less than heart disease or cancer.

Currently 65% of U.S adults are overweight, with 35% being obese. Of children and adolescents, 30% are overweight with 15% of these obese.  This may be the first generation of children to have a life expectancy less than that of their parents.  Alarmingly, some experts are predicting that based on current trends, all Americans will be obese by the year 2050.

Complex health conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure have been unequivocally linked to being overweight .  Limitations of physical activity due to being overweight has some correlation to depression. Conversely, being at a healthy weight promotes the psychological boost of feeling better emotionally.

 A Solution

Semaglutide / Tirzepatide

The newest rage in weight management is semaglutide.  Social media, especially TikTok, is currently flooded with videos lauding the miraculous effects of this weight loss drug.  Numerous celebrities and the Twitter mogul, Elon Musk, have enjoyed success with semaglutide and the demand has outpaced the supply wherein there is often a wait to obtain the medication.

Created in 2012 by a Danish pharmaceutical company, semaglutide was developed to treat Type 2 Diabetes.  This medication mimics the gut hormone GLP-1 which is responsible for regulating insulin and blood sugar levels.  It works to curb hunger and confers a sense of fullness and satiation in the user.

Tirzepatide, another medication for weight loss is both a GLP-1 and GIP hormone receptor agonist. It stimulates two receptors in the gut and is often used when semaglutide becomes ineffective.

When used in conjunction with a reduced calorie diet and increased exercise, semaglutide and tirzepatide have been shown to substantially decrease body weight in patients with or without diabetes.

The most common side effects are GI related (nausea, vomiting diarrhea, constipation, or headache), are easily treatable and tend to lessen over time.  Although rare, side effects involving the thyroid, pancreas or kidneys have been reported.

The medication is administered by injection once weekly. The initial dose is gradually increased over the span of several weeks until a maintenance dose is reached.  Beginning Price:  Semaglutide: $350/month.  Tirzepatide: $450/month
