Skin Tightening

The Power Of Heat

As we age, it is inevitable that our skin will become lax, adding years to our appearance.  In large part, this is due to the changes in collagen.  Collagen is the protein responsible for skin thickness and firmness. It is continuously being produced and broken down. However with age, the balance of production to breakdown becomes unequal: collagen breakdown starts exceeding production with replacement collagen fibers becoming less organized. After age thirty, we lose about 1% collagen production yearly. This results in loss of firmness, elasticity and thickness in the skin and other body structures.  In the past, tightening of lax skin was only possible with a surgical lift. While this could produce dramatic results, it came at a cost: Downtime, discomfort, surgical risk or anesthetic complications and always… a scar.

Today’s active lifestyles leave little time for post-operative recuperation. Additionally, those seeking tighter skin want to be assured that the end results will look natural. We now have a simple, noninvasive alternative: Deep dermal heating. At the Randali Centre we use the new Exilis Ultra 360. Heating is achieved using the energy of radio-frequency combined with ultrasound. The combination of these two modalities creates a synergy which results in better tissue heating than either alone. And, the Exilis Ultra 360 is the only device currently available which utilizes this amazing combination.

The small handpiece of the Exilis is used to heat the dermis (the second layer of the skin) to about 50° Celsius. At this temperature, collagen fibers contract and fibroblasts (the cells which produce collagen) are stimulated to produce new and better collagen. An immediate contraction of the existing collagen affords a subtle but immediate tightening for most. However, the majority of tightening is seen about six weeks following treatment when the formation of the new collagen occurs.

Lax or wrinkled skin of the face, neck, decolleté and hands can be treated.  Especially responsive is the thin skin around the eyes and on the neck.  The lips are now a target for therapy too.  Treatment here generates a subtle increase in volume, reduction of fine lines and an improvement in lip color.

Exilis treatments are safe, painless and quick. Time of treatment is dependent on the area(s) being treated. Most treatments are completed in 15 to 30 minutes and all patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately. As each treatment builds upon the others, the best improvement is appreciated with three to four sessions spaced 7 to 10 days apart.

Firm skin is essential for a young vibrant look and with Exilis Ultra 360, it is now possible to improve overall firmness and tightness of the skin without injury or downtime.

Feminine Rejuvenation

The newest way that tightening modalities are being employed is in their use for vaginal rejuvenation. The aging process (as well as tissue trauma of childbirth) leads to loss of tightness and firmness in the vulvar and vaginal area and is experienced at some point by almost every woman. The manifestation of this can be urinary incontinence as well as diminished sexual pleasure for both partners. In the past, these concerns could only be addressed by invasive surgery which included painful recovery and prolonged down-time. However there is now another option –  the Exilis Ultra Femme 360.

How It Works

The Ultra Femme 360 targets two different areas of the feminine anatomy: the labia and the vaginal canal. Treatment with the Ultra Femme results in tightening of the labia and vaginal canal, (thereby decreasing the diameter of the vaginal opening), an improvement of natural lubrication and sensation and increase of blood flow. Additionally, these treatments are effective for stress incontinence (leakage of urine with vigorous activity, coughing or sneezing). Ultimately, with these treatments, the vaginal and vulvar areas can be restored to a more youthful healthier state.

Treatment begins with the insertion of a gel-covered disposable wand into the vaginal canal. The tip is moved in an inward and outward motion as the wand gently heats the tissue in a 360° radius. The treatment takes only eight minutes and is painless.

The second phase of treatment involves treating the labia (outer tissue) with a different disposable tip. Gel is again applied and the tip is moved in a continuous motion creating a comfortable feeling of warmth. It is not uncommon to see an immediate, visible tightening of the labia during treatment and many patients report that the area feels better supported straightaway. Time of treatment is twelve minutes; Complete treatment time for both inner and outer areas totals 20 minutes.

In contrast to vaginal rejuvenation with laser devices (which are painful, require lengthy treatment time and give rise to vaginal discharge of a weeks’ duration), Exilis Ultra Femme 360 offers a pain-free, 20 minute treatment that is without downtime: intimacy can be resumed immediately. Three treatments are recommended 7 – 10 days apart.  Maintenance is one treatment yearly.
