As we age, it is inevitable that our skin will become lax, adding years to our appearance. In large part, this is due to the changes in collagen. Collagen is the protein responsible for skin thickness and firmness. It is continuously being produced and broken down. However with age, the balance of production to breakdown becomes unequal: collagen breakdown starts exceeding production with replacement collagen fibers becoming less organized. The small handpiece of the Exilis is used to heat the dermis (the second layer of the skin) to about 50° Celsius. At this temperature, collagen fibers contract and fibroblasts (the cells which produce collagen) are stimulated to produce new and better collagen. An immediate contraction of the existing collagen affords a subtle but immediate tightening for most. However, the majority of tightening is seen about six weeks following treatment when the formation of the new collagen occurs.
Lax or wrinkled skin of the face, neck, decolleté and hands can be treated. Especially responsive is the thin skin around the eyes and on the neck. The lips are now a target for therapy too. Treatment here generates a subtle increase in volume, reduction of fine lines and an improvement in lip color.
